In an increasingly connected world, and with 5G being rolled out very quickly, production habits will have to be updated.

With extremely low latency, 5G will find a great many applications, with upheavals already known in telemedicine, transport, and in industry with the factories of the future — which are being built today, if you don’t want to be part of a past that may have been prosperous but is unsuited to today’s world.

A new industrial world?

In every era, technological change has triggered industrial revolutions. The most recent in industry came through new information and communication technologies, Industry 4.0 and Big Data (not forgetting the emergence and importance of standards).

Nevertheless, manufacturers’ needs and objectives have stayed the same: to control their production as well as possible, in particular by collecting information and making it available. It must reach the right people at the right time to increase productivity and quality.

Tomorrow’s MES runs on the web:

Today, manufacturers need mobility in their shops. The 5G + Big Data formula only wins with maximum connectivity. That is why it is becoming imperative for MES publishers to develop a WEB version of their software to meet these new needs.

This mobility will affect operators’ traditional working methods, which will have to adapt to make the most of this change. The impact will be on 3 points in particular:

  • The necessary pairing of a digital action with a physical action
  • Bringing the digital process as close as possible to the physical process
  • A process centred on the operator, because they are the one who enters the right information at the right time

The strengths of a WEB-based MES:

  • Mobility allows data entry anytime, anywhere
  • Several devices can be used for different purposes: tablet, mobile phone, handheld scanner, radio terminal…
  • A WEB version with a good network allows more advanced uses: photos or videos of parts, machines or scrap for quality control, reporting a breakdown and its cause (by sending machine data or photos / videos)
  • Greater reliability of information, by reducing the data-entry error rate
  • Adding videos, tutorials, training content (in augmented reality) and other demos that are essential to get to grips quickly with the workstation, as well as real-time instructions.

A concrete example of mobility with KmProd:

A company with a stock-tracking problem called on Meta 2i to find the most suitable solution. The company had difficulties tracing its stock, which lengthened replenishment times (for example, a replenishment that should take ten minutes could take more than an hour).

The KmProd solution:

A process for operators to scan, in real time, the contents (with a QR code system), the container and its location, so that the location of stock in the plant is known in real time.

The benefits of this action:

  • Significant time savings
  • Better stock quality
  • Simpler inventories
  • Complete elimination of data-entry and re-entry errors (fully reliable stock)
